Saw this while browsing. I am always amazed at the wide variety of uses of a research result.
Here is an article about myostatin inhibitors. The quote below mentions a use that seems a little ridiculous. Muscle gain without exercise? Doesn't sound like something worth spending scientists efforts on. But reading on in the article it has great potential to be used for Iraq war veterans who have lost limbs and are undergoing reconstructive surgery. Click here to see the whole article.
"Myostatin inhibitors are going to be extremely useful drugs once they reach the marketplace. Other uses include farming animals with more meat and treating muscular dystrophy, plus a very large potential market of people who want more muscle without having to exercise."
Moral to the story? You never know what something is going to be useful for in science research.
