On March 28 or 29th Mom and D. stopped by the house with some bushes to transplant. That day the central coast was the center of the Painted Lady migration. Check out this website that documents their progress--scroll down to the March 30 entry to see the report of what happened in my area. Literally hundreds of them sailed by that day while I was in the back yard. (In case you haven't figured it out, I am talking about butterflies, not ladies with lot's of make-up! But isn't that a great image--hundreds of ladies flying by Mary Poppins style. Wearing purple and a red hat and lots of makeup. I think they would have very colorful umbrellas, too! Can't you just picture it!)
Now check out this website! It's happening across the pond, too! (The butterflies, not the Mary Poppins umbrella flying!) The most cool thing is that the migration is being tracked online by people all over the world. Sort of a modern day version of the Audubon bird count. Actually, there is a modern day version where people track their bird sightings online. Here is the website for the great backyard birdcount.
Apparently this was a banner year for painted ladies since the deserts got a lot extra rain and there was a great feast for the caterpillars.
