I have been reading books that reinforce the connection between eating "real" foods and health. It doesn't surprise me that as we eat more and more processed foods, the incidence of diabetes, heart disease, etc. increases.
But then I hear that when healthy people were deprived of enough sleep, they became insulin resistant, a situation that increased their risk of diabetes. Check out the May 8th archives at Ask Dr. Dawn. She talks about the studies that found this link.
What if the high increase in diabetes among our young people isn't from sodas or high fructose corn syrup or video games replacing exercise? What if it is because they don't get enough sleep? For that matter, how many adults are regularly sleep deprived? Do you get your 8 hours a night?
In reality, all our bad habits probably work together to increase the incidence of disease. But it is interesting to think about the fact that it isn't JUST about the food.
