It starts with a childlike curiosity. That leads to a question. "If I bring a snail down the street to my neighbor's yard will it come back?" Which leads to a way to try to answer the question. (This is sometimes the hardest part. Remember the tiny caterpillar treadmills?) In this case: Find a snail. Mark the snail shell with a Sharpy. Drop it of at the neighbor's garden. Go home and wait to see if you ever see that marked snail in your yard again. Finally, there must be a way to collect the data. I know! A Facebook snail swap page where people across your country can report what they found out.
As they fond of saying in England, BRILLIANT! Check out this link if you want to read the actual story. Honestly, did you think I was making this up?
Humane Master Gardeners everywhere may have to rethink the snail solution of collecting them and re-homing them to the neglected yard down the street. Or as my first and favorite garden adviser (Mom) taught me, throw them over the back fence! We shall see if that is good advice or not. Stay tuned!
