Garden Surprises!

I have a squash patch.  It is planted in front of the sunflower forest.  Both things were planted on an area that used to be the brush pile.  A couple of years of decaying brush made quite a pile of compost and after smoothing it out (and EE making a retaining wall out of logs to surround it) I just planted the sunflowers and squash seeds directly into it.

The squash plants started with random leftover squash seeds.  Some pumpkin from an old package and some other seeds I had saved from squash we ate.  I added a patty pan summer squash from a trip to Alden Lane in mid June.  And look at them!

!!!!! The Aunt found these yesterday and had to go wading into the patch (braving all the bees in the sunflowers) to get them!  Just so you can tell scale, the one in the front right is normal size.  They are the size of small pumpkins!

And wait 'til you see the pumpkins!  BTW, the delicatos didn't do well.  That plant is totally white with mildew and I've only seen one normal looking squash from it.  Oh well, it's not like we won't have enough squash!
